STEAM through Surf and Skateboard

Students learn STEAM on the beach and skatepark.

Learning can and should take place anywhere! Colossal Academy a microschool for middle schoolers, partners with Surf Skate Science . Surf Skate Science, " brings science to life through skateboarding and surfing".

If young people are going to be learning from educators they'd better be learning something they cannot be found with a simple Google search.

Students meet once a week at a South Florida beach or skatepark to engage their minds and bodies. Surf Skate Science

STEAM Through Action Sports

Now more than ever, teachers are competing with social media, video games, and VR headsets. If young people are going to be learning from educators they'd better be learning something they cannot be found with a simple Google search. For Colossal Academy, they found the perfect way to engage their active learners-- action sports. Surfboarding and skateboarding are action sports that activate the entire brain and body through cross-meridian exercises.

Students engage in coordination activities, test out their reflexes, and gain better patience through repetitive practices that take a while to master. This very special and unique P.E. class is paired with a 45-minute lesson on topics that span from physics, engineering, art, technology, and math. Recently, students had to put on their mathematical cap to calculate the ratios of the city population and minimum skateparks required for the city. To continue their practical ratio skills, they worked on scaling their skate park designs, to create models built from recycled supplies and cardboard. They also explored architecture through concrete and design. These lucky students are engaged and look forward to learning from experts in their fields while being on a beach or a half-pipe.
