The MIT Cardboard Boat Race: Where Innovation Meets Fun
Every year, students gather to put their engineering skills and creativity to the test. This creative activity challenges teams to design, construct, and test boats made out of nothing but cardboard and tape. Participants then race their creations, relying on clever engineering to keep their boats afloat (and fast!). This isn’t just a race; it's a unique challenge where teamwork, ingenuity, and a good dose of competitive spirit come together.
Brainstorming & Planning: Creativity on Overdrive
Our team kicked off the project with an intense brainstorming session, debating the best ways to turn cardboard into a functional—and hopefully fast—watercraft. Ideas bounced back and forth, from stabilizing structures to thematic designs, all based on real-world engineering principles taught at Colossal Academy. Students practiced problem-solving by balancing the desire for creativity with the practical need for buoyancy and stability, turning this race into a hands-on learning experience.
The Building Process: Teamwork in Every Fold
After finalizing the design, it was time to build! The students put their heads together (and their hands on tape and scissors) to cut, fold, and secure each part of their boat. They tested small models first, experimenting with how much weight the cardboard could hold and how to keep it balanced. The process wasn't always smooth sailing, but with every challenge, they demonstrated resilience and adaptability.
